Harry J. Weil’s writing focuses on histories of performance and new media art practices. In the next year, he will explore these topics in the regional context of the tri-state area, specifically the Hudson River Valley, where artists have taken refuge from New York City’s soaring cost of living. Through reviews, essays, and interviews, he intends to discover how artists have created vibrant art practices outside of the city, both independently as well as in art colonies and residency programs.
Harry J. Weil’s work has been published in ARTnews, BOMBLOG, artUS, andAfterimage, and he has conducted interviews with Neal Medlyn, Laurel Nakadate, and Alexej Meschtschanow, among others. He is currently a PhD candidate in Art History at Stony Brook University, where his dissertation, Reperformance: Re-creating and Reinterpreting Performance Art’s History, examines the historical and theoretical development of reperformance through a close study of Allan Kaprow, Alison Knowles and Marina Abramovic. He lectures on modern and contemporary art at William Paterson University and Ithaca College.
