Jan Estep is an artist and writer trained in both philosophy and art. Her criticism focuses on the relationship between art and language and has appeared in such magazines as AfterallModern PaintersfriezeBombRain Taxi, and New Art Examiner. From 1997 through 2002<, she was an editor of New Art Examiner, serving as senior editor from 2000 to 2002. She exhibits her artwork nationally and internationally; recent solo exhibitions include shows at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis and Art in General, New York. Her artist’s books and publications, including the folded sheet map titled Searching for Ludwig Wittgenstein, Lake Eidsvatnet, Skjolden, Sogn, Norway, can be found at Printed Matter. Originally from West Virginia and for many years based in Chicago, Estep moved in 2002 to Minneapolis, where she teaches art at the University of Minnesota. Last year she was the arts practitioner/writer fellow at the Stanford Humanities Center, cosponsored by the Stanford Institute for Creativity and the Arts.
