By "contemporary visual art," we mean visual art made since World War II. Projects on post-WWII work in adjacent fields—architecture, design, film, theater/performance, sound, etc.—will only be considered if they directly and significantly engage the discourses and concerns of contemporary visual art. Projects with a pre-WWII component will only be considered if the project’s main focus is contemporary.
About
Arts Writing Initiative
Launched in the spring of 2006, The Warhol Foundation’s Arts Writing Initiative is a program that supports independent, progressive non-profit arts publications and individual arts writers. The result of extensive research conducted by the foundation into the current challenges facing the field of arts writing, the program was designed with the long-term goal of reinforcing the infrastructure of the field and insuring that critical writing remains a valued mode of engaging the visual arts.
The Arts Writing Initiative takes a two-pronged approach to this task. Capacity-building grants administered directly by the Warhol Foundation aim to improve the viability of a select group of non-profit arts journals, while project grants to writers administered by the Creative Capital | Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant Program aim to sustain the work of individual arts writers.
In 2007, nine journals were invited to participate in the program. Selected for their ambition, commitment and strong editorial vision, the journals received grants of approximately $100,000 intended to stabilize business practices, increase visibility, and encourage the exploration of new partnerships and distribution channels. Grantees also participate in facilitated day-long retreats during which they meet face to face to discuss shared concerns, exchange stories and strategies, and develop working partnerships. The following journals make up the first “class” of grantees; others will be invited in the coming year.
Art Lies, Houston, TX
Art Papers, Atlanta, GA
BOMB Magazine, Brooklyn, NY
The Brooklyn Rail, Brooklyn, NY
Cabinet, Brooklyn, NY
