Benjamin Carlson
One-Year Writing Concentration (Short-Form Writing)
Benjamin Carlson, a freelance critic, will concentrate on writing exhibition reviews with the goal of publishing two or three reviews a month for one year. He will address contemporary practices that reach beyond the limited scope of the commercial art market. Philadelphia's contemporary art exhibition spaces (The Slought Foundation, Space 1026, The Fabric Workshop, and the Institute of Contemporary Art, among others) will feature prominently in the project. In addition, he plans to visit other regional centers such as Power House (Memphis), Midway Contemporary Art (St. Paul), The Power Plant (Toronto), and Western Front and the Contemporary Art Gallery (both in Vancouver).
Benjamin Carlson has published many reviews in
Modern Painters,
including, most recently, "The Situationist International (1957-1972)," "Monika Sosnowska," "Working Profile: Dike Blair," "Michael Smith: Drawings Simple, Obscure and Obtuse," "Howard Hodgkin," and "Stephen Prina." He has also written many reviews for

, including "Mike Bouchet," "Wilhelm Sasnal," "Elmgreen & Dragset," "Nancy de Holl," and "Seth Price."
