Clare Davies is currently pursuing a doctorate at New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts. She studied rhetoric at the University of California, Berkeley, and minored in both LGBT studies and art practice. While associate director of the Townhouse Gallery in Cairo, she began writing professionally, helped establish an outreach program for working children, and was responsible for the gallery’s primary grant-writing and curatorial functions. , as well as publications accompanying exhibitions of the Sharjah Biennial (2008), PhotoCairo (2008), and the Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam (2006). Davies has participated in various symposia and lecture series, including Homeworks V, Beirut (2010); the Independent Study Program of Contemporary Art, Townhouse Gallery, Cairo (2010); the Arts Writing Workshop, Bidoun Projects, Dubai (2010); Kharita 01: Symposium on Urban Trajectories in Cairo (2009); and Museum as Hub: Antikhana, New Museum, New York (2008). Her dissertation on the work of three modern Egyptian painters has taken her back to Cairo.
