Catherine Quan Damman’s “Vivian Browne’s Black Internationalism” will recuperate African American painter Vivian Browne’s crucial and understudied role in American art in the 1960s and ’70s—from her political activities in the United States to her travels in West Africa and China. The article will situate her work in lineages of Afro-Asian solidarities and Black internationalist feminism.
Catherine Quan Damman is the Linda Nochlin Visiting Assistant Professor at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. In September 2025, she will start her appointment as the Valeria Napoleone Linda Nochlin Professor; Assistant Professor in Modern and Contemporary Art. She is finishing a scholarly monograph, Performance: A Deceptive History, and her writing has appeared in publications including Artforum, Bookforum, BOMB, 4Columns, and frieze.
